There’s been no shortage of snow this year in the Arts District. Northeast has been covered in blankets of new flakes before much can melt, creating an enchanting view of our beloved place, begging to be captured. Enjoy this winter photo tour through the District by photographer Lisa Roy.

The Grain Belt brand used to occupy several buildings at the end of 13th Avenue to the west of Marshall Street. Above is the main building, home to RSP Architects, American Craft Council and a handful of others. The Bottling House and the Warehouse (not pictured, to the north of the main building) combine nearly 130,000 square feet of space for artists and creative businesses. The Bottling House boasts a large atrium that is used exclusively for arts-related events.

The most visible confirmation that you’re in the District are the multitude of street banners that wrap the arts district boundaries, and are placed on major streets near art buildings throughout the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District.  The city-designated boundaries are Broadway, Central, 26th Avenue NE and the Mississippi River.

The Northrup King Building, under its familiar water tower, is home to more than 350 tenants, including 300 artists and various small business and nonprofit organizations. Regularly open to the public on First Thursdays, Saturdays, and during Art-A-Whirl® and the Fall open studio event.

The Q.arma Building in Northeast Minneapolis is home to over 25 artists, located at 1224 Quincy St NE. Prominent in the photo is Q.armalita, newly designed and built by owner Jono Query, one of the longest-running occupants of the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District – since before it was an arts district.

Sheridan Memorial Park – Veterans memorial sculpture created by local artist Robert Smart, located behind the Grain Belt complex along the Mississippi River.

Solar Arts Building – home to about 20 artists, open for events such as First Thursdays and Art-A-Whirl®, Fall Open Studios and select Saturdays. Its historic charm has been preserved, while upgrades have been made to be more environmentally friendly, including the addition of 109 solar panels on the rooftop to power the creativity of the artists in the building.
