In a story based on a handful of arts areas in the American Southwest, the online forum Hyperallergic took a look at what they’ve lost, gained, or wish for — any of which could be a cautionary tale or a pat on the back for our arts district.

It appears as arts districts grow, other forces, from developers and city officials to universities, have sought to make arts districts better fit their purposes rather than working with an arts community to collaborate for a shared vision. The article shows how some arts districts are using historic designation and other tax tools to help them save and enhance the arts community. A mix of factors, most site-specific, such as history or natural amenities, contribute beyond commercial success.

How do you define success and what have you learned from travels to other arts districts? Comments are welcome at info@northeastminneapolisartsdistrict.org.
