Not a single person should be going hungry in the United States. Everyone deserves the fulfillment and pleasure of nurturing – and delicious – meals. This shell echoes a cornucopia, but it is empty – the promised harvest is yet to come for so many. I imagine how different our world would be if every last one of us were free from the hunger of not having our most basic needs met – food, healthcare, housing, and education.

This piece is the first in a series of banners, inspired by the visual and emotional language of parades, exploring social and personal ideals and desires. By transform signage meant for public display into cloth, I pull it into a context of intimacy and individual meaning. Then by hanging a sign in my home, I am speaking to myself about myself; both asserting and claiming my values, my ideals; shaping and being shaped by my own hope.

The ideal contained in this shell is both an intimate need and a dream for community – to be known and loved. The swirling text echoes that drawing-in of familiarity like an embrace; The beaded interior reinforces the notion of beauty contained within it.

The lung-like symmetry of the Tellin (or “Angel Wing”) shell supports this vision of tenderness and well being.
