Seed Pod

Dimensions 28” x 18” x 10”
Medium:: Fiber Sculpture

It is the milkweed pod that nurtures and protects its seeds as they matured. The plant is also life and blood to the delicate Monarch butterfly who migrates a 1000 miles in the fall. When the plant matures, the pod must open releasing the flat papery seeds each with its own feathery wings to drift for miles. In the end, the pod stands proud, empty, beautiful, as it grows brittle with decay. Meanwhile, the seeds land and burrow into the earth with the promise to repeat this cycle of life for the butterfly and plant.

This pod shelters the beginning of life, then releases the potential of the renewal of life , in the end it must let go of life.

“The arrival of the white buffalo is like the second coming of Christ,” says Floyd Hand Looks For Buffalo, an Oglala Medicine Man from Pine Ridge, South Dakota. “It will bring about purity of mind, body, and spirit and unify all nations—black, red, yellow, and white.”

A White Bison is considered sacred to the indigenous tribes of the plains. The National Parks are the ‘White Bison’ in our times. These parks hold sacred the formation of the land etched in them along side the native fauna and flora with remnants of the indigenous people and the lessons they have to teach us. This White Bison is the spirit of America and gives us hope for the future.

The raven is an archetype that appears in many different cultures. It can be a messenger of bad news or a savior of the world, a trickster or creator, a stealer of the soul or good luck, a linkage between life and death. The power of its dichotomy in meaning is intriguing, philosophically puzzling, artistically challenging.
