In January 2016 our inaugural edition of Arts Insights contrasted NEMAA and the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District. At the time it was recognized that there were 700 artists working in the Arts District. In six years the number of artists working in the Arts District has grown almost 75% to 1200 artists.
The emergence of Art to Change the World and NE Sculpture | Gallery Factory created opportunities for artists who work in social practice art and fine art sculpture. There’s a home in the core of the city to create public art. MPLSART.com has been a steady presence since 2005 and has grown a large audience with stories of artists and art events throughout the Twin Cities. Artspace purchased the Northrup King Building cementing a long term commitment to the arts in Northeast Minneapolis.
With that sale the growth of Studio 400, Public Functionary and Creatives After Curfew has been transformational both physically and symbolically. Having people of color out front and now more visible to the arts community means opportunities for more voices, ideas and energy to permeate the city.
As we settle in for another creative winter season the concepts of attracting talent and opportunities for artists are moving to the next stage. With growth there is need for more energy, organization and thoughtfulness to ensure that we can reach the milestones that surely lie ahead. We look forward to helping tell the stories of the artists of the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District in 2022.

Communities reflect themselves in public art

|
When is a wall more than a wall? Through art, a community can make a utility shed or an outhouse into a symbol of themselves. The latest examples of this have popped up in three Northeast neighborhoods: Logan Park, Beltrami, and Northeast Park, the latter of which hosted a celebration unveiling the newly minted artwork adorning a bathroom facility on …
