Dear reader,
As one of the speakers at a public hearing June 30 said, “artists are who you turn to when nothing else works.” She was speaking in favor of a proposal coming before the Minneapolis City Council to consolidate, formalize, and expand the city’s commitment to arts by funding an Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs. We have the background and re-print a Northeaster editorial on the subject in this e-newsletter.

Past surveys of Northeast artists show that we’re among the most politically engaged. We vote. We write letters. As a non-profit organization we’re prohibited from supporting or opposing candidates. But with 2021 an election year, the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District board is working on non-partisan ways to help the residents and workers in the Arts District to get the information needed to decide who to vote for and how to advocate. Whether it’s through forums or questionnaires, we welcome your input on questions to ask local candidates about what’s important to you.

Weigh in on creating a new Arts Office for Minneapolis

In late July, the Minneapolis City Council will vote on an ordinance establishing a Department of Art and Cultural Affairs.
