Arts District News

February 1, 2021 - Issue 110

Dear reader,
What does it take to embolden artists to leverage their natural assets? Especially in
the self-deprecating Midwest, we tend to undersell ourselves. In this e-newsletter
we’re treated to three ways that individuals helped us look in the mirror and see
ourselves as others see (or should see) us.

Perhaps David Felker’s greatest gift as instigator of Art-A-Whirl 25+ years ago was
his insistence that Northeast artists’ art was as good as or finer than any he’d seen
before. Denise Tennen envisioned the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District appearing
at the MSP International Airport — and we’ve been awarded two of their prime
display spots for a year. Barbara Bridges and Art to Change the World welcome new
apartment residents in a way that challenges a new generation, an influx of potential
art collectors, something often talked about but in a much more tangible way –
starting as gifts from their building owner and the community.

Call it a gift or a Valentine, February marks another month down in the journey
toward post-pandemic. Be good to yourselves, and elevate each other.

— Margo Ashmore Vice President of the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District
