What does it take to embolden artists to leverage their natural assets? Especially in the self-deprecating Midwest, we tend to undersell ourselves. In this e-newsletter we’re treated to three ways that individuals helped us look in the mirror and see ourselves as others see (or should see) us.

Perhaps David Felker’s greatest gift as instigator of Art-A-Whirl 25+ years ago was his insistence that Northeast artists’ art was as good as or finer than any he’d seen before. Denise Tennen envisioned the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District appearing at the MSP International Airport — and we’ve been awarded two of their prime display spots for a year. Barbara Bridges and Art to Change the World welcome new apartment residents in a way that challenges a new generation, an influx of potential art collectors, something often talked about but in a much more tangible way – starting as gifts from their building owner and the community.

Call it a gift or a Valentine, February marks another month down in the journey toward post-pandemic. Be good to yourselves, and elevate each other.

Artist and Art-A-Whirl Instigator David Felker dead at 80

Northeaster awarded for arts and more

Arts figured prominently in the Northeaster newspaper’s awards from the Minnesota Newspaper Association’s Better Newspaper Contest, judged by journalists from another state. The Northeaster won a first place for Use of Photography as a Whole in its circulation category, and , a photographer with studio in the Casket Arts Building won a first in Portrait & Personality for his portrait of Warren Thomas Fenzi.
