Winning second place in the USA TODAY 10Best Readers’ Choice Travel Awards is “amazing,” say Northeast Minneapolis Arts District (NE-AD) board members. The award was announced May 7. University Circle in Cleveland, Ohio took the top spot.

Nominees for all contest categories are chosen by a panel of relevant experts which includes a combination of editors from USA TODAY; editors from 10Best.com; relevant expert contributors; and sources for both these media and other Gannett properties. “To even be nominated is an honor,” said NE-AD chair Josh Blanc.

|
While the pandemic may have leveled the field for institution-based and event-based and districts, including Northeast, Northeast is also distinguished as a production district, where artists continued to work on public art commissions, tile and other home improvement and décor. It’s the geographic area from which many pivoted to online sales. In fact, Art-A-Whirl®, the popular spring open studio event, will happen mostly virtually May 14-16 through stores at nemaa.org/art-a-whirl.

Northeast Minneapolis Arts District thanks all the dedicated USA TODAY 10Best voters locally and across the country who propelled this district toward the top, dipping no further than fourth place during the month-long contest and holding at #1 or #2 for much of it. “Our mission is to keep this geography intact, while growing the amount and variety of arts space and connections within it. An award of this nature brings needed attention at home as well as nationwide,” Blanc concluded.

Travelers continue to notice and remember the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District
through our art exhibits at the Minneapolis–St. Paul International Airport. Our
SpringForwardMN fundraising appeal will help mount future exhibits and document
the district.

The Northeast Minneapolis Arts District (NE-AD) is officially designated as an Arts District by the City of Minneapolis. NE-AD’s Board of Directors was established in 2014 and merged December 30, 2020 with Northeast Community Development Corporation.
