December 1, 2020 - Issue 108

Dear reader,

It has been a hell of a year for most of us. The pandemic has been front and center in almost every conversation since March. National politics has been painful to watch. The murder of George Floyd in our own city shook us to our core. The economy has been bad for many and good for some. We lost a great artist and friend this year with the passing of Aldo Moroni. Being an artist in times like these can and did create moments of reflection that allow creativity to flourish for many. Lots of stress is part of that reflection. How safe are my family and friends? How do I make a living selling art when the world is struggling for the basics? Am I doing enough to help others? It all can be overwhelming.

Many Arts District artists rose to new heights this year. Peyton Scott Russell created iconic art of George Floyd giving us a mirror and marker of that tragic moment. Mary Johnson’s Max Rabitat sculpture became a social media public health icon, even at the CDC, for the wearing of masks to help remind us to act responsibly and safely. Leslie Barlow’s murals and the development of Studio 400 have been groundbreaking and have elevated her in the Twin Cities art scene. Artists based in the Arts District rose to the occasion and helped others through their art and their giving of time and empathy by donating art to fundraisers all across the city.
We have a lot to be proud of as a community. As 2021 arrives we all hope for less stressful times. Art has always been a great mirror to society. It can heal and cause empathy for others, in some cases make us ponder our existence. I find it to be especially satisfying to live in an arts community that even when society seems dark the art and ideas artists create is always uplifting.

For jobs and arts: Arts District fights to preserve industrial land

By: Board of Directors

On Friday, Nov. 13, the Minneapolis City Council voted against the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District’s interest for the property development on 2301 California St. NE.
