Arts District News

August 1, 2023 - Issue 145

Dear reader,
It is hard to ignore the impact of winning the best Art District award for the third time. This time around, many people have commented to me that it means more now more than ever.

Seeking community again, more than 50 people attended the celebration picnic. Mayor Frey and Council Members Payne and Rainville attended with congratulations. Ben Owen from Arts@MSP (the MSP International Airport Foundation’s arts program) and Vince Brown, owner of the Northeaster newspaper were there to talk with the artists. Opportunities and recognition abound throughout the Art District.

We are not like other arts districts around the country. Most are not as organized the way we are. All arts districts have similar issues, such as attendance at events, developers wanting to buy the buildings artists/studios occupy, getting higher rents displacing artists. Artists want a seat at the table on decisions that government entities are making that affect them. What sets us apart is artists showing up and making sure we are part of the conversation.

Our win is not by chance, it is a result of artists volunteering for neighborhood groups and arts organizations. We show up not waiting for someone else to do our advocacy. So many artists work to help others and give back. That is why we are successful and why we continue to get better. Thank you for all YOU do to make this the best arts district in the country.

Doug Argue, an alumni of the Arts District, is a name many people might not remember. From 1996-98 he had the 6th floor studio in the California building. If you have ever been to the Weisman Art Museum you might have seen a huge floor-to-ceiling chicken coop painting from 1994.
