Joel Sisson and the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District board have officially signed a working relationship as Fiscal Sponsor, and a micro loan from the Arts District to build multiple works and place his sculptures, affectionately known as the Barrel Boys, within the Arts District’s boundaries. They will work together to identify, initially focusing on two main areas: Central Avenue and the Art Buildings within the Arts District. Through this process, the Arts District aims to create an Art Walk concept, identifying areas or creating pads where temporary or permanent sculptures can be placed.
Made from reused barrels in various forms and colors, plastic and metal beer barrels are most readily available. Joel will have all the discretion to create what he sees in his vision of the Barrel Boys: family groupings, building climbers, sitting on the edges of buildings, social justice, dancers, etc.
The Barrel Boys will mostly be featured as temporary installations, lasting from three months to three years. The Barrel Boys will be available for sale or can be commissioned for site-specific spaces. Once installed in identified spaces, the goal is to inspire other building owners and city officials to want them in or on their locations.
The Arts District aims to expand the art experience from artists’ working studios to public art, featuring interactive outdoor art engagement. The goal is to place multiple Barrel Boys throughout the Arts District so that people see one and say, ‘That’s cool.’ As they continue to drive, bike, and walk, they see more and become curious about why there are so many and if there are more. A Where is Waldo effect to bring an art spectacle showcasing sculpture as a fun and inviting way to explore the Arts District in a new way. The project aims to raise $60,000 through in-kind material donations, sponsorships, grants, and financial donations.
Josh Blanc, the Board Chair of the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District, will serve as the board liaison to the Barrel Boys project. Seth Statmiller will be the committee liaison for the Central Avenue Art Walk portion of the project. The project will aim to identify spaces on Central Avenue. Joel, Josh, and Seth will work to connect with building owners and community leaders to create fundraisers and PR for the project. They will also work to find volunteers to help build and implement the Barrel Boys. There will be numerous opportunities for the community to participate in the project.
