Congratulations to Patricia Canney on her “Mojo Coffee Morning,” the front cover of the 2023 Northeast Calendar produced by the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District. With a studio in the California Building, she is devoted to the coffee shop. Calendars will be available free, first-come first-served, starting possibly the weekend of Dec. 3 but for sure by Dec. 7 at sponsoring businesses. Many of the previous years’ sponsors have returned.

Periodic press checks for color registration quality control, as the 2023 Northeast Calendar rolls off the press at Bolger. The pages may look out of order, but by the time everything’s printed and collated, they are in the right spots.

Other artists whose work represents the months include Janet Bayliss, Jennifer Hansmeier, Jeff Kraker, Linnea Maas, Suzanne Skon, Angela Lundberg, Brendan Kramp, Alexander Schlee, Scott Shore, Leslie Wise and Karen Kraco. Thirty-three artists in all submitted a wide range of 90 images. The art jury consisted of photographer Mohamed Barre, fiber artist and printmaker Ingrid Restemayer, branding firm owner Ben Harris and calendar designer Louise Harty.

Arts District board members commented that not only do the images keep getting better and better, “the collection tells a succinct yet layered story of Northeast.” A handful of folks from the Arts District enjoyed touring the printing plant on November 23 as the calendar printing started.

The calendar also updates what’s happening in the Northeast neighborhoods, highlights four arts ally organizations and the Arts District’s accomplishments over the past year. Dawn Williams worked with advertisers, Louise Harty did the graphics, and Margo Ashmore wrote the continuity material and generally assisted with the project.

During a tour of Bolger Vision Beyond Print, printer of the Northeast Calendar, one of the pressmen (center of photo) thought he recognized Louise Harty (at right) from her photo in the calendar and asked “is that you?” Jennifer Young is between them. (Photos by Margo Ashmore)
